Women in Residential Remodeling Conversation  – June Monthly Discussion Forum

We would like to reflect on the recent PRO Awards and discuss how women impacted the event, by both their presence and participation. From the first moment of walking into the venue, the party was welcoming, vibrant and full of positive energy. The rooms were filled with a mix of men and women. They were connecting with one another and buzzing about industry topics and the upcoming announcement of the night’s winners. The MC was a woman and approximately half of the guest presenters were females. Individual company representatives and teams, comprised of a balance of men and women, stood at the front of the stage area to collect their prizes and pose for photos. The two most prestigious awards were given to women, Michelle Glassburn and Sterling Bump. Although the three student scholarship recipients in attendance were all young men, a highly accomplished young woman was also a recipient but was unable to be at the event. What does this mean to all of us in terms of our place in the design/build industry? We have been perceived as minorities in this type of business enterprise, yet progress continues and the imbalance is no longer a given. How can we continue to show up for one another as our numbers increase? Have the challenges changed? Have the indignities and unfair practices gone underground or is the shift deep and lasting? What are your thoughts as move forward as women in this world of building that we all love.
